The Idealism of Youth vs. the Cold Realities of Growing Up

Growing up in the 60s and 70s, I remember how much I cared about the way the world was going. I was really angry with the shortsighted selfishness and conformity of those in power.

I wanted to change the whole world. So did many other young people I knew...

Now many of them have corporate jobs, drive gas guzzling SUVs and live in huge, resource wasting, cookie-cutter McMansions, built where woods or farmland used to be.

What went wrong?
If our middle-aged selves could meet our idealistic, younger versions, what would we have in common? Would my idealistic younger self be proud or ashamed of what I've become? Could my older self just dismiss my younger self as hopelessly naive and impractical. How many insights would my younger self be open to?

Good questions. The answers could be even better...

The Greatest Challenge the Human Race has Ever Faced - and Your Important Part in This

Throughout our long history - long for us, short in the geologic scheme of things - we humans faced many difficult challenges: disease, famine, ruthless rulers, war and more.

Many millions died, many still do from these terrible causes. We're the descendants of tough, resourceful survivors.

The ultimate test
But now we face an even greater challenge. How we play this out will decide whether most of us - or even any of us - can survive.

Of all species who ever lived, we are clearly the smartest - at least in technological abilities. But it remains to be seen whether other parts of our intelligence can catch up to our destructive abilities.

Weapons of mass destruction could kill millions of people, perhaps everyone on earth. We are destroying our environment at an ever faster speed. We tolerate a world where 1.2 billion people live in poverty - when all the resources are there to solve these problems.

You are the solution
The problems may seem overwhelming. But the better you understand them, the more you can have a new, very important role in helping solve these challenges.

Following leaders may have brought evolutionary advantages at times but, now more than ever, we need to take better control of our future.

Here's some good ways to empower yourself:
