Amiad
Finkelthal
joined the Board in March 2011. He has 20 years of journalism and
communications experience. He is the Associate Director of
Communications & Public Affairs for the New York University College of Dentistry.
Mr. Finkelthal previously worked for two major
public relations firms, Edelman and Ogilvy. He also has substantial
experience as a reporter for magazines specializing in marketing, executive
management, travel and tourism. Mr. Finkelthal has provided valuable
communications advice to Hearts & Minds since 2008.
Dave
Peterson, in tan vest, monitoring elections in Nigeria with the National
Endowment for Democracy
Dave Peterson,
Chairman, is a founding member of the
Board, serving with us since April 1996. Senior Director of the Africa program at the National Endowment for Democracy. He
supervises six full time staff members and grants to more than 200 nonprofit organizations. Since 1988, his annual funding has grown
from $200,000 to $7 million.
Mr. Peterson helps foster democratic political
development in more than 20 countries with a total population of more than 450 million. He
works with senior government officials and civic leaders to strengthen independent media,
civic education, political parties, business, labor, human rights and other groups. He is
deeply involved in troubled areas that include the Congo, Liberia, Nigeria,
Sierra Leone, Somalia, Sudan and Zimbabwe.
Since 1978, Dave's 29 years of experience include serving
as executive director of Project South Africa for the A. Philip Randolph Educational Fund
and work as a freelance journalist. He has Masters degrees from Johns Hopkins School of Advanced
International Studies and Columbia University School of Journalism.
Dave
Schwier
joined the Board in January 2004. He
is Hearts &
MInds' manager of legal affairs and regulatory compliance and has volunteered
with us since 2004. He is a practicing attorney since
1999. Since 2002, he works in New Jersey as a claims manager with a
major insurance company. Mr. Schwier handles a wide range of complex claims
associated with environmental contamination.
Mr. Schwier previously worked for over two
years in general legal practice at a firm in Princeton Junction, New
Jersey, specializing in litigation. Dave is a member of the New Jersey State
Bar Association and the Federal Court for the District of New Jersey (Third
Circuit).
Mr. Schwier graduated from the College of
New Jersey in 1996 with a B.A. in History. He has a Juris Doctor degree from
Rutgers University School of Law in 1999.
Katie
participating in the Seniors for Change
program she helped create
Katie Lusk, Secretary,
joined the Board in January 2008. She also interned hundreds of hours as Hearts & Minds
as Manager of Editing, Fundraising and
Volunteer Recruitment.
After graduating from Pepperdine in June 2006 with a
degree in English: Writing and Rhetoric, Katie moved from Los Angeles to New
York with her husband in October 2006. She’s currently an editor at a
major publishing company. She was also an editor for the
Association of New Jersey Chiropractors’ newsletter and a freelance writer.
Matthew Basirico,
Vice Chairperson, joined the Board in November 2010. He brings a passion for serving others to Hearts & Minds. His work
with Habitat for Humanity and the Police Athletic League proved to be
valuable volunteering experience and taught Matt about the need to help
others. He learned leadership skills and disciple while in Army ROTC.
After
graduating from Loyola University with a degree in Psychology, Matthew began
a career in finance. Working with seasoned investment bankers and private
equity investors taught Matt successful business values and what it takes
for any enterprise to excel. Matt is co-founder and partner for Adroit
Capital Group LLC., a private equity firm in midtown Manhattan.
Panfilo
lifted himself from poverty conditions
Panfilo E. Sanchez,
Treasurer,
joined the Board in August 2010. He
is Hearts & Minds' accounting manager
and has volunteered more than 500 hours here. He graduated from York College
CUNY with a Bachelor’s degree in accounting in 2004. Mr. Sanchez started
volunteering with Hearts & Minds in 2007. He is working for an ABM in the
environmental field.
Mr. Sanchez moved from Guatemala to New York in 1991
to avoid the devastation of civil war. He was also looking for better
economic opportunities, and to raise his family in a safe environment.
His first hand experience with poverty in Guatemala is valuable to the End
Poverty Campaign.
Bill
has a lifelong goal to help address global
survival issues that affect us
all
William
"Bill" Blackman is founder and president of Hearts and Minds Network, started in 1996. He is also
a founding member of the Board.
Since 1981,
Mr. Blackman has worked
with both small,
new ventures, and large, well-established organizations, achieving exceptional results. For
example, he was retained to help launch the
American Institute of Philanthropy,
working on strategic planning, publicity, copywriting and design. Within six months, AIP
attained substantial funding, membership, and coverage by more than 400 newspapers, radio and
TV stations nationwide.
Bill's experience encompasses publicity, sales,
direct mail, broadcast and print advertising. He has worked with nonprofits, publishing,
and marketing companies that include the AFL-CIO, Encyclopaedia Britannica, General Foods,
National Liberty Insurance and Time Warner. Bill is also a writer and photographer.
