Purpose of this page:
Hearts & Minds believes in connecting the people
it
helps, and who visit this site, with the legal resources they need. This is done in coordination
with these groups and with nonprofit organizations within the
greater New York area and beyond. Listed here are their contacts for
services which, through pro
bono practice, they provide for you without legal fees because you
may not be able to afford such fees.
Feel free to scroll down the list broken into categories of 1)
"self-help" for pro bono; 2) website sources of pro bono organizations
and 3) specific committees and law firms that work with groups and non-profit groups for pro
bono. Once again, all groups work with themselves and at times, with nonprofit
organizations:

"Provides youths ages
12-21 with health care, education, legal services, counseling and arts and recreation,
under one roof and at no charge. The Legal Services Center provides assistance on legal
matters like emancipation, immigration and family court."
Provides legal services as well
as counseling and preventive measures for youth; helps teen parents access benefits;
and helps with employment wage issues, as many youth arent as
knowledgeable as they could be
about their job earnings. The center is also available after closing hours sometimes, which
could be quite helpful to some, and has emergency appointments. Great site for the youth
to be involved in, whether in helping or being helped. -LLL

"Most of our clients
are, or have been, victims of domestic violence and come to us in the midst of severe
family crisis. They seek orders of protection, divorces from abusers and assistance with a
variety of related issues. Our work directly impacts the lives of some of the citys
poorest and most vulnerable women and children. We have helped hundreds of women obtain
the personal and financial freedom to which they and their children are legally
entitled."
Pro Bono Areas:
domestic, child, family abuses and/or related situations
Locations: Manhattan, The Bronx
A center that
specifies in a certain area is always a plus. Listed success stories on the site provide
for a better idea of what an organization like this could really do for someone. Helping
these women get away from and divorce abusive mates for the sake of their lives and their
childrens lives is critical in helping to solve their present problems and
planning for their futures.-LLL

Constitutional, humane conditions of confinement for prisoners; future custody and care
issues for the children of AIDS patients, unemployment, debt, and bankruptcy issues;
marriage and child custody issues; tenant; community/neighborhood issues
Locations:
All of NYC Because it is an organization covering all of NYC, it appropriately involves
itself with many more issues through pro bono than many other groups. Set up are
a couple of specific Projects and Units that each specialize in AIDS to immigration to
housing and everything else in between. It is also an important organization in that
it
participates in the betterment of neighborhoods and communities, in addition to
its legal
services. Take advantage of the services it provides.-LLL

"Provides legal services, education and
advocacy to the New York Arts community, frequently including vital issues of importance
freedom of expressions and the First Amendment."
Pro Bono Areas: the Arts Our right to express ourselves is not only a Constitutional right but a right we are
born with. Occasionally there are those who are out there that try to strip away that
right from us. It is very positive that there is a place to go to where there is someone
on your side willing to legally prove your right to freedoms of expression through art.
The organization is also supported by the National Endowment for Arts and the New York
State Council on the Arts, among others.-LLL

"CorporateProBono.Org (CPBO), is a national outreach project
co-sponsored by the Association of Corporate Counsel
(ACC) and the Pro Bono Institute (PBI). CPBO
online can also be a valuable resource for pro bono organizations, providing unique
insights into the world of in-house volunteers and offering a quick and easy way to
advertise to the corporate community, through online services, technical assistance to the
in-house community, and educational outreach, we encourage and support."
Very colorful site; easy to navigate. Geared more to lawyers, law firms and corporate
companies about Pro Bono and getting involved, but the many articles and question/answer
links can be very helpful to average citizens who are curious both about Pro Bono and qualities
to look for in the company they may choose to represent them.-LLL

the community at the same time as it affords our attorneys excellent practical training

"The practice of law is a
service to society. Pro bono is a strong component of the firm's culture, growing with the
firm as it expands globally, including assisting third world countries. When a citizen's
access to justice is thwarted by inability to pay a legal fee, the fabric of our free
society suffers. We are obliged to use our best efforts to see that the economically
disadvantaged receive adequate legal services." Pro Bono Areas:
Affordable housing; Artists and the arts; Assisting
low-income or minority entrepreneurs; Asylum; Bankruptcy; Brief service and advice;
Children; Civil rights; Clinic, advice only; Clinic, full service; Community legal

social and
community based organizations to provide legal services in legal matters to low income
Long Islanders."
Pro Bono Areas:
Housing/landlord and tenant; family/matrimonial law; bankruptcy; consumer
issues.
Site a little bland, but important for those who reside on Long Island, which can be
considered part
of the Greater metro area of New York in addition to NYC. It also provides brief legal
advice and counsel in addition to representation, if needed. However, this is for civil
matters only (not criminal), and for those who meet Federal poverty guidelines.-LLL
