Think Globally, Walk
Locally: Hearts & Minds’
End Poverty WalkathonSM - Sunday May
18, 2008
For Immediate Release Hearts & Minds, a New York City-based
nonprofit, is organizing a Walkathon to help end extreme poverty
around the world. It takes place on May 18, 2008.
Why your help is
important Participating walkers help support the world’s most achievable
and sustainable program to end global poverty. The program asks each of the
wealthy nations to contribute 1.5 percent of their national income (GDP) to
end extreme poverty - the same percent given to the Marshall Plan. That
changed the course of history for impoverished Western Europe after World
War II.
Hearts & Minds’
End Poverty Campaign program is
comprehensive and ambitious. It includes free and fair trade, debt
forgiveness, disease prevention, micro loans for the very poor to start
their own small businesses, and many other social entrepreneurship
innovations. All this is helped by a greatly expanded Peace Corps.
These low-cost, proven methods work directly with
those in need, bypassing corrupt and inefficient bureaucracies. Solutions of
this kind have already helped millions of people lift themselves from
poverty.
The New York City event New York City residents can join Hearts & Minds for a 10K
(6.2 mile) walk in Manhattan on the west side. The route is along the
little-known Hudson River Greenway in Manhattan, right next to the Hudson River. It
includes great views of the river, historic buildings and more. Registration
opens at 1:15 pm; the Walk begins at 2. Contact us
for details.
“We're very excited about the Walkathon,” says
President and Founder, Bill Blackman. “It’s our biggest event of the
year.”
Walkers will pass many interesting sights, including
sculptures, museums, parks and spectacular views. Every walker receives a
guide to points of interest along the way.
People can also participate
from anywhere. They may contact Hearts & Minds at 1-212-280-0333 or
