it gives each and every individual the power to control their lives. And we can work
together to create a just, sustainable world. Dictatorships are one-way streets. Democracy boasts
two-way traffic. Democracy is not something you believe in or a place to
hang your hat, but it's something you do. You participate. If you stop doing it, democracy
crumbles.
Those who love peace must learn to organize as well as
those who love war.

alike share in the government to the utmost" What our country deserves from everyone who enjoys its
fruits and freedoms is a little more gratitude – and a lot less greed. The only sure bulwark of continuing liberty is a
government strong enough to protect the interests of the people, and a people strong
enough and well enough informed to maintain its sovereign control over the government. Whenever the people are well-informed, they can be trusted with
their own government. The surface of American society is covered with a layer of
democratic paint, but from time to time one can see the old aristocratic colours breaking
through. America's support for human rights and democracy is
our noblest export to the world. The basis of our
government being the opinion of the people, the very first object should be
to kept that right; and were it left to me to decide whether we should have
government without newspapers, or newspapers without government, I should
not hesitate a moment to prefer the latter.
