We abuse land because we regard it as a commodity belonging to us.
When we see land as a community to which we belong, we may begin to use it with love and
respect. To waste and destroy our natural resources, to skin and exhaust the
land instead of using it so as to increase its usefulness, will result in undermining in
the days of our children the very prosperity which we ought by right to hand down to them. We won't have a society if we destroy the environment. If there is to be an ecologically sound society, it will
have to come from the grass roots up, not from the top down.
What is the good of having a nice house without a decent planet to
put it on? Take nothing but pictures. The earth is man's only friend. The
old Lakota was wise. He knew that man's heart away from nature becomes hard;
he knew that lack of respect for growing, living things soon led to lack of
respect for humans too. We're finally going to get the bill for the Industrial
Age. If the projections are right, it's going to be a big one: the
