A small house will hold a hundred friends. What is a friend? A single soul dwelling in two
bodies. The only way to have a friend is to be one. Friendship is not born of words alone. Tell me your friends, and I'll tell you who you are. Do not protect yourself by a fence, but rather by your
friends. Bad friends prevent you from having good friends.
So long as we are loved by others I should say that we
are almost indispensable; and no man is useless while he has a friend. I am speaking now of the highest duty we owe our
friends, the noblest, the most sacredthat of keeping their own nobleness, goodness,
pure and incorrupt. . . . If we let our friend become cold and selfish and exacting
without a remonstrance, we are no true lover, no true friend. Love is blind; friendship closes its eyes. A real friend is one who walks in when
the rest of the world walks out. An insincere and evil friend is more to be feared than
a wild beast; a wild beast may wound your body, but an evil friend will wound your mind. One who seeks no friends is his own enemy. The time to make friends is before you need them. Friendship doubles joy and halves grief. A friend is one who knows us, but loves
us anyway.
