God is the comfort of the poor. You can't get rid of poverty by giving people money.
We think sometimes that poverty is only being hungry,
naked and homeless. The poverty of being unwanted, unloved and uncared for
is the greatest poverty. We must start in our own homes to remedy this kind
of poverty. Poverty is the mother of crime. A man isn’t poor if he can still laugh. If a free society cannot help the many who are poor,
it cannot save the few who are rich. It's easy to have principles when you're rich. The
important thing is to have principles when you're poor.
In a country well governed, poverty is something to be
ashamed of. In a country badly governed, wealth is something to be ashamed
of. I can live without money, but I cannot live without
love. Think about it: Every educated person is not rich, but
almost every educated person has a job and a way out of poverty. So
education is a fundamental solution to poverty. Most
poor people are not on welfare. . . I know they work. I’m a witness. They
catch the early bus. They work every day. They raise other people’s
children. They work every day. They clean the streets. They work every day.
They drive vans with cabs. They work every day. They change beds you slept
in these hotels last night and can’t get a union contract. They work every
day . . .
