Dear [name of elected representative]: In the Darfur region of Sudan, more than 400,000 have been killed and 1.2 million displaced. This was done by the Janjaweed, a pro-government Arab militia whose name translates into "evil men on horseback with guns". Ultimately, the Sudanese government is responsible for what seems to be a policy of ethnic cleansing and forced displacement. Many of these refugees have no shelter. Their villages have been torched. Their children starve. Many of the women continue to suffer the psychological and physical effects of sexual abuse. High malnutrition rates, poor sanitation, a weak medical infrastructure, and the difficulties of providing food and shelter are likely to lead to a sharper increase in death rates. Further, many of the refugees along Chad’s border are still unprotected from attacks by the Janjaweed and Sudanese armed forces.
