Checklists
A valuable help for overcoming addictions

To strengthen your resolve during times of temptation, create checklists that list:

  • Disadvantages of your addiction.

  • Long-term advantages of quitting.

  • Positive alternatives you can do right away when feeling weak.

Here are some examples:

Costs of Addictions

  • Wastes time, energy, money

  • Embarrasses and hurts you and others

  • Ruins health, looks, relationships

  • Can impair judgment - you may harm yourself and others. Some addictions can kill you

  • (For some addicts) exploiting or encouraging others to join in, subjecting them to all the potential costs, too

Alternate Things to Do

  • Call friends, especially supportive ones and accountability partners

  • Go to additional support group meetings

  • Have alternate activities readily available... for example, if you enjoy art, have art supplies handy or take a walk (have shoes handy).

  • Read Advice for Addicts to see more that you can do

  • See our Self-Help and Support Group Links for helpful support groups and our Volunteering Links for other constructive activities you can choose
