Can You Benefit from Therapy?
Ways to Know

Many different challenges all have potential solutions"Four Faces" and "You're Not Alone" paintings by Lucy Infante

You could gain from therapy if any of these apply:

  • You're not achieving your potential with work, family, friends and relaxation.

  • There is too much conflict in your life (even if you rarely feel it is your fault).

  • There is not enough friendship and love in your life. You often feel isolated and lonely. You aren't accepted by peers.

  • You have difficult and hurtful relationships. (These may be repeating dysfunctional patterns from your childhood.)

  • You feel paranoid: You feel the government or aliens have singled you out for harm, you hear voices, or television programs are directed just at you.

  • You had an unhappy childhood and have not fully worked through its unconscious but powerful emotions. You're not alone

  • It is hard to keep a job.

  • At work, less talented or less dedicated people often get raises or promotions before you.

  • You have an addiction.

  • It is difficult to relax or find much pleasure.

  • You often feel fearful, anxious, depressed or angry.

  • You neglect your health or appearance.

  • You avoid or delay getting help.

IMPORTANT NOTES:
This is not a complete list of serious symptoms. It is also often difficult for people to evaluate themselves.

Almost everyone can benefit from therapy. A highly-trained professional who knows your particular situation can help you decide what steps are best for you.

First steps
Admitting there is a problem is the first and the most important step to take (and a difficult step for many people).

There is a wide range of therapies and therapists to choose from. Many are available at low cost or on a sliding scale, for example: Low-Cost Therapy in New York City
