Cell Phones
Best ways to use them

By Denessa Bachelor

One of the best forms of communication known to man is also one of the biggest distractions in an ever-evolving, growing world.

Everywhere you turn, there’s someone on a cell phone. A day can’t go by when someone isn’t talking on it in his car, on the street or taking pictures with it. Welcome to our ever more wired world!

The attractions
There are many reasons for the cell phone craze but a big one is convenience. It is a great way to keep in touch with a distant friend or call for an emergency. The small size allows you to take it everywhere. And cell phones today can do much more. They let you play games, check e-mail and take pictures, maybe at the same time. Some even have built-in pocket computers.

The dangers
The worst problem is talking while driving. This can distract you from the road. Your eyes move away from the road while dialing, so you risk crashing.

It is still controversial, but some studies show long term use of cell phones may cause brain tumors or other cancers. Many millions of people have been using cell phones for years without trouble. The concern is that cordless phones communicate with low-level microwave radiation. This penetrates human tissue. www.ehso.com/ehshome/cellphonecancer.php

Make yourself safe
It is always better to be safe than sorry. With cell phone radiation, the dangers may not be huge but it’s better to play it safe. Here are a few tips:
• Use an earpiece so you can hold the phone away from your head. This reduces possible radiation danger from it being close to your brain.
• You can also protect yourself by using an external antenna in the car.
• Use speed dialing - keep your hands on the wheel.

The isolation
As useful as cell phones can be, they don’t take the place of human companionship. If most of your socializing is on the phone, you may even lose some of your skills to communicate face to face with others.
Don’t let technology interfere with human needs, such as in-person connections. It’s good to spend "face time" with your friends and loved ones.
