READING Read newspapers, books, and magazines. Visit websites. Pick something a little above your current level. Try to understand words from the context. Only look up those words you need in order to understand the meaning. You will find that each author tends to use certain words more often than others. This repetition will also help you learn. The Bible and other scriptures are a very good way to practice reading. Translations in many languages are readily available. The verses are often numbered, so you can read a passage in your native language and then in the new language. Some particularly poetic, interesting and inspiring sections of the Bible include Psalms, Proverbs, and the Gospels. Many TVs have closed captioning, with which you can see the English text (subtitles) at the same time you can listen to the English dialogues for many television programs. You can also completely surround yourself with opportunities to speak, use and learn a language. For example, spending time on vacation where you will be surrounded by native speakers helps you make very rapid progress, especially if you are studying the language while there. You can also do volunteer work with native speakers. Work with refugees and immigrants here in the US or become involved with volunteer help projects overseas.
