Helpful info for potential volunteers

Thank you for your interest in volunteering with us! We work to make sure our volunteers gain valuable experience while helping others.

You’ll learn more about volunteering here. It explains our hours, activities, what you can learn with us, and will probably answer most of your questions.

Meeting us

Please read this before we meet. It will help you prepare for an info session with our president. It includes an individual meeting with him to see how we can create your best volunteer experience.

The info session usually lasts 25-45 minutes. It’s usually Tuesdays at 3:00 PM. Other times are available.

If you’re not in New York, an info session can be arranged by phone, WhatsApp, Signal or Google Meet.

If you want to work remotely

You can do some activities outside our office. We’re happy to talk about this, based on your interests. Just ask.

If you live reasonably nearby, we like you to consider also volunteering at our office. Here, you’ll work with other volunteers, participate directly in strategic conversations and more easily make new friends.

If you’d like us to give official acknowledgement for remote volunteering, we need to know what you’re doing, so that we may keep track.

Limits for some activities

There is some flexibility in our requirements. You can ask us in advance.

Except for highly experienced volunteers, we ask most volunteers to average at least 10 hours a week.

This is important to read if you need to do community service.

We accept volunteers 16 and older.

Our positions are unpaid, but we provide other benefits.

Please note

Everyone who volunteers at our office is required to sign our Volunteer and Intern Introduction and Agreement before working with us. This is usually done during the info session, so you have a chance to ask questions, but you can email or call and ask to speak to Bill Blackman in advance.

There’s a brief Copyright Agreement we make with some writers and artists who allow us to publish their work.

For all

If you haven’t done so yet, you can fill out our online application now.

To better assist your volunteer interests, we would appreciate an email with your resume and a USA phone number, if you have one, to contact you.

Still have questions?

Feel free to contact us before you visit. You can also call and ask for Bill at 1-212-280-0333.

If it turns out we’re not a match with your interests, we’ll try to help you find volunteering elsewhere.
